History of Love INC National

Love INC (Love In the Name of Christ) began in 1977 in Holland, Michigan, with the purpose of engaging Christians to help their neighbors in need. Simply put, from the beginning Love INC sought to be a tool for Christians to put their faith in action.

Love INC was founded by Dr. Virgil Gulker, a social worker and outreach director who felt the church should share his deep commitment to mission through reaching out to those in our communities who lack adequate resources. The model he created for Love INC helped churches with the leadership, training, organization and prayer needed to better serve those in need. Love INC helps churches help people.

By the late 1980s, Dr. Gulker’s vision had spread Love INC affiliates to more than a dozen US states. In 1988 Love INC became an operating department of World Vision U.S., an international Christian-based relief and development organization. This allowed Love INC to grow through the 1990s, and in 2001 Love INC separated from World Vision and again became an independent national non-profit.

There are currently more than 140 Love INC affiliates in 30 states, comprising a network of over 8,600 churches, 9,200 community-based organizations, and 100,000 volunteers.

Love INC National’s purpose is to:

Humbly serve, learn from, and provide leadership to Love INCs that

Encourages through prayer, caring relationships, connecting local Love INCs to one another, and affirming strengths

Equips by leading the development of new local Love INCs and providing operating Love INCs with training and facilitating the exchange of resources and ideas

Elevates by challenging local Love INCs to assess and improve operations, continually focus on mission integrity and mature in vision casting to increase opportunity for the Body of Christ to show and share the love of Christ.
